Breaking News? Million Euro Wiki is up for sale
Email received these past few minutes;
You are receiving this email because you are currently an owner of a page on the Million Euro Wiki project.
The site is going to be sold. Because of unforeseen circumstances in our personal life, we currently don't have the time and bandwidth to manage MEW. Because this project has great potential, we've decided to get someone in the community to take over. You as a page owner are obviously aware of what the wiki can do for everyone in the right hands, otherwise you would not have purchased a page in the first place.
Because we're not in it for the profit, we've decided to make it a private auction for you guys in the first place. Starting bid is the same price you'd pay for 1 page –$100. With minimum increments of $25.
This includes the entire site as you can see it now, with all the customized code and design. Also the forum setup and blog attached to the site will be included. We'll be happy to host for free until you get you own hosting sorted.
We've included the rest of the million euro wiki page owners on CC and ask you to reply to all with your bid so we can all see what the highest bid is.
We hope you understand that this wasn't an easy decision to make as we're really excited about MEW and it's potential. It just needs more attention than we can give it right now.
Hmmm. OK, so it's up for sale. Not a big deal as the page I have is nothing of importance - it was going to be a test-case for something I have up my sleeve.
The sale is fairly straightforward, a private bidding system open to everyone who has already bought a page on the site. Kind of a thank you for being an early adopter and supporter I suppose…
All the page owners paypal email addresses are on the email also - what sahll I spam them all with
They want an open bidding system, that's why. And then a bid comes in of $100. Immediately followed by another email from the Million Euro Wiki bunch;
The auction time is 24 hours by the way, and we do have a reserve in mind since this site took money to develop. If the reserve isn't met, we'll put the site up for sale for the public.
So, it's not really a thank you to those early adopters at all. Ah well.
Will I bid for this? Not on your nelly. It's a good idea, and I do have something up my sleeve that is very much like a Wiki - and getting to see that a site owner can charge for a page has been illuminating. Can you read between the lines? ![]()

Who gives a toss how much it cost them to develop? Who's to say they weren't ripped off by the developers? I'd be more interested in how much money it's generating before even considering buying it.

Weren't people buying a page guarenteed the pages being up 20 years or something? How can they promise that and then sell the site once they've made some fast cash?

Shameless.

That site must have been a lot of work to develop.
Download a wiki template, change a few paragraphs of text, upload it, add paypal functionality and mail a few well-respected bloggers.
Time and money to develop? Don't let me laugh. These guys don't have any stamina.

Already 1 prominent blogger has "bailed out" without telling their readers the real reason why: http://www.cashquests.com/auction-own-my-page-on-the-million-euro-wiki
Nice!

Now, the first thing that I did when I received the email from the guys at MEW was send this back to them;
When it comes to business, there's no need for sentimment. I wanted to know the reserve price immediately so that I can make plans to either bow out, or buy out. If you read between the lines, you'll have already seen that I am planning a "wiki like" site. I got this in return;
Now, I am not at all bothered that the owners are selling up - it's what business is all about. You buy stuff, or make stuff and then sell stuff.
$1000 is not so bad for a business that has some buzz. I think that it would be cheaper to get a coder to make my own system, hence I won't be bidding.
