Sadly enough I don't think hate is a purely British thing, although I have seen plenty of it when I did live in the UK.
I will never forget someone spitting at my mum when a family friend jokingly called her mum, he is Indian and we are all white.
I know someone here in the US who wanted to go and scare some people who were protesting about the Iraq war, he was all ready to take a shotgun down to scare them off.
"Don't they realize we are fighting in Iraq so they will be free to say what they want and vote"
I never did quite get it through that you couldn't stop free speech in the name of free speech..
Judges in the UK are notoriously old and out of touch, Where I live in the US it is a small place and the Judges actually live amongst us, so hopefully they are a bit more in touch.

And on the flip side, I have a friend in jail for a crime he didn't commit
