Couple of changes at osWorld

Eagle Eyed readers might have noticed a couple of changes that I made yesterday. Both changes are cosmetic, but should hopefully help the blog along a little bit.

Favicon

favicon.gifI made a favicon and added it. Simple change but does add a certain something I think.

It's supposed to be a graph highlighting that the blog is all about making money, testing, tweaking, keeping records and whatnot.

Why add a Favicon?

You can read more about favicons at wikipedia.  Basically they are little graphics which show up in the browser bar and in the favourites/bookmarks list.  They look nicer than the standard graphic, that's the only reason (for me) really.

Top 5 Commenters

comments.gifI also added a "Top 5 Commenters" widget in the sidebar of the homepage of the blog. I've seen this on many blogs, and always thought "must do that". I actually got around to it.

My version works on a rolling 30 day basis - hence any posts made more than 30 days ago are disregarded for the count. This means that the goodness of link-juice is spread evenly at all times.  I also took out Oli's, mine and Dave's post counts as well - it's all for the commenters, baby!
I hope that this little widget will do two things;

  1. Reward those readers who are making good comments, with a nice PR rated linkback to their site.
  2. Hopefully entice more people to post good comments…

What I hope it doesn't lead to is crapola comments such as "hi, nice site" - I won't be letting these through ;)

I plan on making more changes in the near future, so if anything goes wrong, you'll know why.

    I've also now installed Comment Relish. This one emails a message to a new commenter and asks them if they have any questions etc. And if they would like to subscribe to the RSS feed and so on. Looks good. It's something I saw at the blog of Nate Whitehill, but couldn't get the original version from Justin Shattuck working properly.

    So I gave up.

    Today, on the blog of Blogging Tips, I found link to an updated version provided by PatchLog and this updated version installed without any problems whatsoever.
