Running a Subscription Service

If you are a regular blog reader, you'll know that I run a subscription service which is linked to one of my AIS products. The subscription service can in no way be called a AIS, as it simply isn't Automated, though it is, of course, an Income Stream.

I've been running it for about 11 months, and have had an average of about 45 subscriber during that time. Month on month, I've been losing money on this, particularly as I made a promise to all my subscribers that they would get ALL of my future products, scripts, templates etc for free for as long as they continued to subscribe. The most subs I have had is about 60…

During a recent clean out of my whole online business, I came to find that my subscribers had dwindled down to less than 30. Obviously, 30 subscribers are not paying the way. Most of these subscribers were on a low price level that I originally set, with just a handful paying anywhere near a proper amount.

I was a bit perturbed to see the amount of churn that my subscription service has had to take. With that in mind, I decided to reduce the monthly payments to just $15. What this meant I had to do was refund a few subscribers (those paying over this amount), and get them to cancel and re-subscribe - this process is ongoing at this moment.

At the $15 price-point, I hope to get somewhere near to 75 or so subscribers, which would mean I break even ! That would be a good place to aim for, I think, at least in the short term.

I've already changed my "sales" page to reflect the new pricing. Next step is to send out a broadcast email to my list in order to announce the new price-point.

The problem with my subscription model is that the subscribers don't tend to promote to others via word-of-mouth - as the products and services received are best kept to a smallish number of users. That's something that I need to look at in the near-future, perhaps some sort of recurring affiliate payment might help to make sales.

I wonder if you would get more signups and less attrition if you packaged your reseller rights product subscription with a handy service for information product sellers?

Just wondering because, you know, I know this guy with a cool service for digital download sellers :)

I am thinking of joining your subscription and I don't even use smarticle site builder, which I know is a big part of what you offer.

Maybe if you increased it to $20 a month and paid $5 a month commission with some sort of rider if they sell more than a certain amount.
Getting people to be affiliates for anything is hard, well getting affiliates is easy but getting ones that actually sell anything is harder.

    Good luck with it all

    JC, thanks, good idea ;)

Paul; It wouldn't be worth as much if you did not have the site builder, however, that is not a problem as I can do a very special deal ;)

I'm pleased to say that since reducing the price I have had an extra 8 people sign up, with no losses. This is a good start to my eventual aim of 75 subscribers.

Over the coming week, I will properly start advertising this service in the form of sending an announcement to my mailing list. I also have an inkling of an idea that might just work in my favour. More to follow on that.
