Eggs or Baskets, Baskets or Eggs. You Decide.
Stu over at PMPR has this to say;
I wonder whether the time we spend building our blogs would be better spent trying to set up automated income streams which require little in the way of input from us? Spreading our income across many different monetisation techniques in many different niches?
Absolutely spot-on - I'm positive that most readers of this Blog don't realise that this Blog is only the tip of an iceberg.
Why so?
This Blog was never started with the intention of earning money. It was set up to tell HOW I earn money (and some of my other adventures), it's changed a bit since the early days…
Well, since late in 2003, I have been working on my "famous" AIS Schemes. Ways to earn an income without doing an awful lot of ongoing work. That's almost 4 years of daily work at creating AIS's and then watching them earn me cash.
This osworld blog used to go into quite a lot of detail about what I was doing and what I was earning, but I came to the conclusion that giving out so much was hurting me in the long run, and hurting my readers. So I stopped doing it. These days the blog is much less AIS oriented, even though I set up something to do with AIS each and every day.
So what do I do each day?
Be it a simple 1 page selling an affiliated product or a "cookie cutter" affilaite site or a smart or smart hybrid site or an ebay niche store or a script or a software product or a website template or en ebook, or whatever - I ALWAYS have an AIS on the boil.
Stu mentions that some people build one blgo or website up - and that's a good approach, but as he rightly says and I'll paraphrase "why put all your eggs in one basket".
So how to combat this?
Easy as 123. Create loads of different income streams! Don't rely on "just" adsense, or "just" Text Link Ads or "just" whatever. Use them all. I've spoken about different forms of monetisation many times in this Blog and won't go over it again.
A personal example
In the last 8 days, I have earned hard AIS cash from;
- Script Sales
- Template Sales
- Adsense
- eBook Sales
- Text Link Ads
- Direct Link Sale
- Affiliate Commission
That there is 7 distinct streams of income, and within each one is a subset - for example, the "template sales" covers sales made from 3 different websites!
So, what is best? All eggs in one basket, or lots of baskets each containing one egg?

I guess you are not the only one. A friend of mine wrote me today …
"I also have done a nice SEO chameleon plan = SEO to avoid putting all the eggs in the same place and add a layer of anonymity and privacy like having 96 different Class C, different owner for the domain names, different Name servers, different Google accounts, TOR to hide real IP address and computer trace, etc."
He's shooting for 1000 sites by end of 2007, I'm just happy if I can keep a couple in the air
