Idea - Be A Blog Farmer

I brought up an idea within the Keyword Avalanche Forum, but it did not get much traction. I'm not sure why, as I think it's a great idea. My idea was basically as follows;

Get a bunch of bloggers to sign up to an "announcements" service. The service works by having a lot of blogs categorised, then allowing each blog owner the ability to posr Press Releases on other people blogs automatically.

Each blog owner would need to have the courage to allow a centralised service to select their blog and post to it. Thus, they suddenly see a new post appear on their blog.

The reason for categorisation is that you wouldn't want to see an advert (aka press release) for a new poodle site on an acne blog. I'm sure you get my drift.

Costs (I think this was why it didn;t get much traction). As someone is doing the centralised admin and posting, each blogger puts in $10 a month for a membership. This membership gets them 10 announcements per month. That's 10 announcements, NOT 10 blog posts - 1 announcement could go onto 20 or more blogs (assuming there were 20 that matched the advert).

The idea made great sense to me, but as it received little feedback, I decided to hone the idea. After reading Stu's latest post, this got me to thinking…

How about a service which takes the blogs exactly as are in the example above. But instead of asking the bloggers to supply the blogs and pay for the service, the service is used by "outsiders" (those who have not supplied a blog to the service).

When someone wants to promote a new site/product/service, they choose the category of blog and pay $X. They supply a Press Release and this is blasted out to all the blogs in the category chosen.

Now, remember that the outsider has no direct influence on the blogs they have chosen - all the posting is still done by the centralised person who has (semi) control of all the blogs. In fact, all he has is the ability to post, he does not have admin access…

An example

Mr Black has a new website which is an ecom website which sells a home-made acne cure. He knows that the Acne market is a hard one to find a good spot in the search engines, so rather than attempt to SEO his way to success, he decides to simply get loads of (whitehat, perhaps a tinge of grey) backlinks.

He does the usual rounds of article marketing, squidoo, social bookmarking and all the rest of it. Then he stumbles across this blog posting service - and there is an acne category…

There are only 15 "health/acne" blogs available to him. The cost is $60 (or whatever). He supplies a press release and makes payment.

The press release is taken by the Blog Posting Admin and inserted into the queue - ready for posting to the 15 blogs. Over the course of the next day or two, his press release is blasted out to the blogs. Everyone's a winner!

  • Mr Black is happy as he has 15 quality backlinks on themed blogs.
  • The Blog Owners are happy as they have new content.
  • The Blog posting service is happy as they made $60
  • The Blog Owners are even happier as they get a 50% cut of the income.

There are some caveats

  1. Blog Owners need to trust that the content they are to receive will be themed to their blog.
  2. Blog Owners need to trust that the Admin will not trash their blog.
  3. Blogs in the network are NOT splogs. They will need to be proper content based blogs which are posted to at least twice per week BY THE BLOGGER in addition to the occasional "Blast" from the announcement service.
  4. Blog Owner will need to leave the "Blast" as a post for as long as their blog is live. After all, they've been paid, right?
  5. The Admin has quite a lot of work to do, but much of it can be automated. It;s certainly nowhere near an AIS.
  6. Buyer needs to supply a good press release, or article for the "Blast".

Conclusion

I have not seen a service like this. Basically, it's a network of blogs to which 1 person has the ability to post announcements. The buyer selects the relevant blogs, and supplies a press release. And, of course, payment. The blogs are posted to over a day or two. Blog Owner gets 50% split of income.

What say you to this idea?

I like it, actually I like it a lot! Any plans to implement this?

Hey Burt - Thanks for the love! :-)

I like it. It would be a bit scary to hand over "the keys to your blog" to someone else though.

How do you think readers of the blogs involved would react? Would this get the same reaction as payperpost? I think it might receive an even harsher backlash, as the posts aren't even written by the blogger concerned.

Keiron; I have the nuts and bolts in place. It's a case of tightening them all up to make sure the whole thing doesn't fall apart. BUT…to be really successful á la ReviewMe/PayPerPost/TextLinAds it really needs a backer with an awful lot of capital. I probably won't bother taking it forwards.

Stu; You only are handing over the ability for the centralised Admin person to make the odd post on your blog. Nothing else - for that, they don't even need to log into your Admin area. I'm not really sure how blog readers would react, but I would say "it's my blog, I'll post what I want, when I want ;)" - now whether they would continue to read said blog is another matter - a bit like the "heated discussion" we had a few months back I suppose. I defended your right to post what you wanted, but stated I probably wouldn't read it…

It's certainly an interesting idea twist to the idea of PPP/Post-Level Ads. Whether it's got legs… I don't know, but I'd agree that it would probably take significant effort to develop the system and build up momentum.

That's not to say that it wouldn't work or that some clever person couldn't find a cheap 'n easy way of doing it.

BlogWhore sounds quite apt… "Use my blog whenever you want, but pay me for the pleasure!"
