osCommerce Directory - a source of traffic
Another good source of traffic, is to "show off" the software you are using on your new sites. As an example, take a look at the osCommerce Shops directory - here you can add your (osCommerce based) website.
I run a website based on the osCommerce architecture, unfortunately my website is denied listing as it sells items that are specifically excluded in the rules of that directory. It's a real shame, but hey-ho.
In the past I ran a T-shirt store for a short while - and had it listed on the osCommerce directory as a sponsors shop - it would often get a couple of thousand visitors per day solely from that link.
Note though, the old style directory was much better laid out than this latest osCommerce directory! The main problem though, is that no-one bought anything - everyone visited just to see how well the T-shirt shop had been changed from the standard layout of osCommerce…
However, if you think of the traffic that pass through (without buying a product), can this traffic be monetised in other ways? If they have come to look at the style of your site, perhaps they might be interested in purchasing a book on "how to design a store", or maybe a TemplateMonster style template. They are obviously looking for inspiration, and what better way than to present something which might help…
Here's the idea - how about a pop-under which only appears if the referring page is a "oscommerce.com" page showing a "template" type product.
Alternatively, how about a block of Adsense, or a link to a clickbank product. How about funneling the traffic through to a money site? How about going the opposite direction and having a link to a "paid for" solution such as Jshop or Actinic?
How about just doing nothing and wasting bandwidth on tyre-kickers ![]()

Cant wait till HPDL reads this. Honestly, I used to use oscommerce a few years back, last I used was milestone 2. So glad I moved away.

Here is a niche directory site for shops running osCommerce. Certainly wont have as solid of traffic as the osc live shops directory, but maybe one day will help extend some link juice to the osc shops out there
