Pre-Production Movies - a website?
Some time ago I bought a domain name based on the TV series Nip/Tuck. I had the idea of making it into a "catch all" website for UK viewers of that particular TV series…
At the time I was involved in a few other projects so didn't have the time to build the website and create some articles about this new series (remember at the time, it had not been shown in the UK)…
So I outsourced a website design and someone to "download" episodes of niptuck and write a review of each one. For whatever reason, I was let down by the person who was going to download and watch the videos, so I never took the site forward.
However, that acorn is still there…
Here's an idea - how about scouring imdb.com to find "in production" and "pre production" movies. Choose a good movie (or two, or three ;)), buy some decent domain names and install wordpress. Start blogging about the movie, it's stars, the soundtrack, where it is being filmed etc etc.
How to monetise such a site?
You'd need to sell movie merchandise such as posters, dvd's soundtracks etc. The only real player in this market is Amazon and the % commission that they pay is absolutely dire. So to monetise this effectively you will need a lot of traffic.
Not all the posts need to be directly about the movie. As an example if the movie is being filmed in Prague, you could write any number of posts about Prague, how to get there, sights to see, hotels to stay in and so on - this type of post would be very easy to monetise using Adsense or similar Pay Per Click…
Other ideas
You could offer free stuff such as a computer wallpaper, or some line drawing for children to colour in. You could offer some sort of "countdown widget" counting the days until the movie is released. You could link up with an autograph selling site and sell autographs of the stars for a commission.
Does it have to be movies?
Well, obviously not. You could do TV series, or pop bands or up'n'coming movie stars. I know that Oli has in the past created sites about Pop Bands. There is certainly a lot of possibilities out there, all ready to be exploited by someone forward thinking enough to be the first to bring a site "to market"…
The possibilities don't end there…
Once the site gets some nice PR and good traffic, how about monetising it further - what about "text link adverts" where advertisers pay you directly? How about taking it one step further and contacting advertisers. Surely they would be willing to take a look at the #1 site on the web for XYZ movie
Maybe you could contact a few hotels in Prague and get a nice free holiday in return for some exposure on your site…

I think this is a great idea in particular as from my own experience, it's very easy to get in early when you know what's coming up
A similar kind of idea can be applied to almost any future event that you know is going to happen.
BTW, which Digg plugin are you using, Burt?

Will; I've no idea. Oli installed it, chuck an email at him.

Re: The Digg feature
It's just a standard piece of Digg Javascript: http://www.digg.com/tools/integrate

Thanks, Oli. I tried 3 plugins without much luck and then landed on Digg's own which worked nicely.
