Videos on Blogs

I've noticed a recent tread of bloggers using Video to convey their messages.  I kinda like it, you get to see what the blogger looks like and a bit of an insight into their "way" (in terms of NLP).

There are some problems with Videos though;

  • those who browse at work
  • those who have no speakers or headset
  • those who don't have time

For me, the disadvantage of using video outweighs any advantage, so you'll be unlikely to see any videos on this blog.

I have (and do) create videos which are used as training videos for my software etc - I think that these are ultra-useful.  But for simply conveying a message, which could just as easily have been typed, why not type it?

The issue, as you describe it, isn't a black or white discussion. You don't have to either "go video" or "go text". The notion is silly.

Ask your readers if they would prefer to see a video post of you, just once per month, and see what the response is.

My guess is it would be overwhelmingly yes.

Or why not create a "video" section where people who don't browse at work, and own speakers, and have a little time can watch your videos (the majority?), ah, best of both worlds right?

Like you said yourself "I kinda like it" ;-)

I implemented this video a couple years back. http://www.scotiabank.com/hr/Interviews/starters/tova.html
For those who don't want to watch the video, the can click the "Read the text of this Interview" right below. Works great!

What you type may be alright, but I really don't want to hear you drone on word… by word… by word… zZzz

Corby, I think your approach is spot-on. It brings the advantage of Video with the portability/usability of a written medium.

I forgot to mention that Video is hardly friendly to those who are hearing disabled.

It also works with SEO as well, something that video will have a hard time with for some time. ;)

I agree with the time thing.
Often, well written text is a lot faster for most things, especially if I just want information.
Video has great entertainment interest though

It's funny. I was thinking that same things recently. Because of my job roll I read lots of SEO blogs etc. When they include videos it annoys the hell out of me!

Maybe it wont catch on mainstream? Who knows.

I loathe video because I can't skim it- I rarely read an entire blog post, and when I do its because something caught my eye and I wanted to read more.

I like Corby's approach- at least then I can skim the "transcript."
