Disclosure Policy - useless or useful
A bit late with this as I meant to comment on it last week, but as my old dad always said; better late than never.
Those PPP Powers That Be are at it again - having seen the backlash against the service from a number of individuals, they've thought up the next can in their six-pack; disclosurepolicy.org
Basically, the premise appears to be "well, we've seen that people don't like the non-disclosure, so join up this new service, create a policy for yourself and then all the nay-sayers have nothing to say nay about"…
OK, so I think the intention for this new site/service is good - but, and isn't there always a but…a lot of people never were that concerned about disclosure. I couldn't give a rats arse if you use PPP on your blog - all I want to know in advance is if a post contains a PPP link - thus rendering the post useless, and for me, unreadable.
To all you PPPers out there, who might read this, why cannot you just put "PPP" as the very first bit of the title of each of your PPP posts? Why so; because it'll allow those people who don't want to read your crappy posts the chance to delete such posts from their feeds. What's it take to add PPP to the title as you are writing it? 1 second?
I have no doubt that a number of people will try to say "well, I post my paid posts in a paid post category". You might well do that, and good for you! But, realise this - there are not many readers who use a category structure for viewing posts - most readers use a feed or use the weekly/monthly archive in my opinion (as borne out by the stats on this blog).
I hope that disclosurepolicy goes a step further than it has done - the language they use is what I would call "politico-speak". You know, politicians never give a straight answer to a straight question.
With that said, here's my challenge;
- The powers that be at PPP - why won't you simply direct all PPP users to place "PPP" in the title of their posts?
- PPP users - why won't you place PPP in the title of your posts, voluntarily?
So, I hope to get some answers from you PPPers - will those answers be politico or straight up? Give me some reasons why PPP in the title would not work - would it cause issues? Would it ruin the whole ethos of hiding paid for links?
Final Word
I truly hope that disclosurepolicy catches on. However, in it's present format it's pretty useless in my opinion - most bloggers who make cash from their blogs already disclose that some links are aff, adsense ads have "gooooooogle" stamped all over them. So why cannot PPP? It seems that PPP have taken a ball-pein hammer to knock down the Great Wall of China, but it's a start at least, for which I applaud them.

As I said on Stu's blog the other day, stamping PPP posts with a little "This is a sponsored post" in the same manner as AdSense is stamped with "Ads By Goooogle" would seem to be a simple solution to a simple problem. Wouldn't it?

The sound of silence is deafening.
JC has found a new service which aims to remove the bad bits of PayPerPost.
