Social Bookmarking
Over recent weeks I've been researching the phenomenon that is Social Bookmarking. At first glance, it seemd to be just a bunch of bookmarks but on a webpage rather than a browser button, and so I never really gave the whole thing much thought.
After reading a report on Social Bookmarking, I became more intrigued and decided to do some of my "testing and tweaking" procedures, by submitting pages to some of the more popular Social Bookmarking sites and seeing what the result is…
Here's my findings;
- When initially added to the sites, new bookmarks tend to go onto a "what's new" page. These pages seem to be very popular and tend to give a high(ish) number of clicks within a 2 hour period. Example: http://reddit.com/new
As soon as the bookmark drops off this page, hits decrease. - Over the course of 10 days, can definitely see incoming hits from general bookmarked pages.
- I have also found that your own "profile" page tends to get linked in the "normal" search engines, this is good for one way links.
All in all, it's been an interesting experiment, and I am now using the Social Bookmarking sites as an added string to my "get traffic" bow. I highly recommend that you do the same!
There are a couple of tools which help to make the bookmarking process easier/quicker, I will cover these in greater detail in a future post.

I've had great success getting traffic from StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, Fark (although that's not really a "real" social bookmarking service and more of a news aggrigator) and a few others.
My biggest problem with social-bookmark promotion is that its very time consuming- I look forward to your future post about making it quicker/easier- RSS is by far the most effective method I employ across all sites, and it takes much less time with an automatic ping list. I usually reserve social bookmarks for content I really feel is exemplary.

reddit seems to work very well for me.

I get visitors coming from reddit where the reddit page has ranked highly for the search term. Kind of like a short cut to high serps.
A good tool for social bookmarking is http://www.onlywire.com - it saves a lot of time.
