Adsense derailed

This months adsense returns have frankly been crap. So far I'm down 35% on July which in turn was static versus June. Bummer.

It seems that Google has really got its act together with delisting/derating sites that do not have absolutely unique content. My big cash cow site keeps plugging away and is actually marginally improved. However, my portfolio of sites which primarily use freely available articles for content have gone into reverse - big style. For the first few months after launch, these sites (50 of them) were performing reasonably well and looking to make 4 or 5 times the outlay needed to set them up in the first year. Now its looking like break even plus maybe a few hundred bucks :(

Over the last few weeks a number of adverse things have happened:

  • sites published on sub-domains that had recently been listed by G were delisted except for perhaps the first two sites on the primary domain
  • I can no longer get listings for any sites published on sub domains
  • sites on unique .info's have been relegated or de-listed (these are not "black hat" sites - just using none unique content)
  • any decent page rank I had on a few of the sites that remain is essentially gone (but I have not changed any links!)

I haven't added to or subtracted from any of these sites, neither have I added any new links to them. MSN has also relegated the sites so not just adverse with Google.

A couple of months ago I thought about writing an e-book about how to make good supplementary income by publishing multiple adsense sites using content freely available from the web. I'm now thinking about writing an e-book that details how that won't work :)

This was an interesting six month experiment and I learnt a lot along the way but I have to conclude at this point that bulk adsense sites using none unique content will not make you rich! It will be interesting to see if there is a further down turn (or perhaps recovery!) over the next couple of months.

I think this is happening across the board Dave…my AdSense is massively down this month and it seems to be happening for a lot of people.

My white hat, proper, whatever you want to call them are still making money though so that would kind of back up your reasoning.

Fortunatley my affiliate income is up this month so hopefully that'll offset the AdSense decline :)

I'm seeing the same kinda thing around my neck of the woods too. To be honest, I'm kinda glad because:

    1) It forces me to rely on AdSense less and focus on more sustainable revenue streams.

    2) It was becoming a pain to manage so many domains and hosting accounts.

    3) I'll save a heap of money on domains and hosting by letting the domains expire!

I could start building again, but I really don't want to.

My adsense earning appear to be about 15% down - I attribute this to the changes google made to "small time" adwords publishers.

After I finish up my next project (which should hopefully before the end of the month), my next project is to build 100 content sites. Once that's done I'll be in a better position to give you more data…
