Why do people get quite so angry?
I have quite a short fuse, I admit it - in terms of our business, I get frustrated by people who can only see as far as their nose and no further.
I also get very angry at other, more important stuff like racism and sexism etc, but that's a given for anyone who has morals.
However, I don't resort to basic threats and name calling. Yesterday I received some nice messages from someone on the Keyword Avalanche Forum, let me set the scene;
My JV partner released Version 1 of the Site Building Tool to the members of the KA forum - version 1 was not really built for public use so was quite limited. It was quite hard to change the look of an outputted site unless the person knows quite a bit of .css…
I found changing the look straightforward, so I put together a couple of templates and asked people to "buy me a beer" and I would send the tempate 2 pack to them. I charged $4.50 (USD) for the two templates - as you can see I was not in this for the money, I thought it would be a nice gesture…
Version 2 of the Site Building Tool includes templating as standard, this meant that the "beer" 2-pack is not compatible with Version 2 and therefore would not be usable…
Now, I knew that I would be producing a 9 pack of templates for Version 2, so I decided to let these go free of charge to anyone who bought me a beer *before* the World Cup started. Those who bought me a beer after it started got a seperate 3 pack of templates instead. Usual price of the 9 pack is $125, usual price of the 3 pack is $47.
So, for a $4.50 spend, every buyer would get at least $47 worth of templates usable with Version 2. I announced this in the KA forum, so that everyone was quite aware to go to the original download link and grab their new pack of templates once Version 2 is live.
Version 2 gets released and I spend some time going through the buyers of the "beer" 2-pack and sending them either the 9-pack or the 3-pack.
Only problem being that my email got filtered by their ISP (so some did not know that a new pack was waiting for them), however as I mentioned, I also announced this in the Forum…
Roll forward a day or two, and I get this (by Private Message):
Any chance of getting the 2 templates for the new sniche creator… if you sent them out I never gottem.
I messaged back to explain that the new Version is incompatible with the old templates, and that there is a new pack of templates waiting for him. The reply:
So they're no good huh? GREAT.
I then offered him a refund, as it was fairly obvious that the guy has issues that I cannot be bothered to deal with. And let him know the www address where he could log in to get the templates…
How the heck do i log in, that's all I want to know. don't get your knickers in a knot
I then decided I couldn't be bothered with this guy at all, so logged into my download script and cancelled his downloads. Then went to Paypal and refunded his $4.50…
F** you jack… keep your f**king prescious templates .
Hope you choked on the beer I bought you.
dickhead.
Please note that I have starred out the swear words.
And then 1 more message received:
You just made the biggest mistake of your life.
By this time, I'm literally quaking in my boots
so I do a little checking and it turns out that this guy in his late 50's! I can expect this sort of behaviour from a 20 year old, but from someone mature? I decide to give the guy a last chance and send back a message:
If you wish to apologise for your behaviour, I will set your download links live again, it's no bother.
So far, I have had no response ![]()

Oh my, :0 ,that's awful, Burt. But, rest assured, you did everything right, and that guy is just a jerk. I'm actually surprised that it was someone mature because it did sound like some immature 'script-kiddie' that we all have encountered at one stage or another.
People like that are not worth a second more of your time!

He sounds a bit weird. Possibly just annoyed at the fact that you had the bright idea before he did… Like the rest of us
You displayed great customer services skills and did everything that you could have to please this guy.
Just remember that there's no pleasing some people and if he's got a bee in his bonnet about your service you're better off not offering it to him any longer.

Love it, the whole "kill him with kindness" approach. Good for you, for not getting down to his level.

Burt, great response to him, but always remember " Stupidity and Imaturity does Not Discriminate Based on Age" anyone at any age, even at 50 can be an a-hole.

Personally I'd have a word with Scott over at KWA and see if they can't go ban this member, I mean abuse like that is just not on.

Funnily enough I was drinking a bottle of Astro Nazurro (cheap Italian lager) when I felt shards of glass in my mouth. The inside of the bottle was cracked!
Hope you choked on the beer I bought you.
It came true! Now I really am scared

I get these occasionally but mostly from would-be customers who never bought anything. In fact one guy sent a whining message on Sunday night at 10pm complaining that he couldn't place an order and we'd lost his business. He gave no details except he wanted a bracket priced at 2.95. I put this in the shopping cart and placed a test order with his email address. The copy came through just fine so I emailed him to say it was working and unfortunately I couldn't do more without further details. He blasted back a message calling me a liar and other unpleasant comments. I didn't reply but I did wonder what drugs he was on. With England having just lost the critical match, I suspect he was on his tenth pint. It seems to me that drink and drugs are responsible for a lot of the rudeness that comes our way.
