Idea, Domain, Hosting

So, having made the decision to use the blog as a way to show how to think up a website and show the day by day evolvement of it, my next stage was to brainstorm an idea for a website.

My first idea was to choose a piece of software that lots of people use and simply blog about that software each and every day thru 2010.  Maybe something with an ecommerce bias like Prestashop.  I do something similar on a different blog about osCommerce.  I threw that idea out as it's too like my other blog and I really want to sell a product on the new site.

So I spent some more time branstorming, and looking back through my past sites to see if any were particularly successful.  While I was doing this I was contacted by one of my cousins who wanted to know if I had any details about our grandparents - this sturck me as something rather interesting.  The amount of people into Genealogy and Family History is absolutely massive!  So how about something to do with that?  I had previously run such a site a long time ago and sold it after just a few months for a small profit.  I'm starting to get excited about it…

So, with the decision made to start up some sort of Genealogy site, my next choice was to choose a niche.  Why not printed Surname Histories - the type of thing that people can order to see the history of their surname, famous people with the same name etc.  Sounds good!

I then had to choose a domain name, for the new project.  I spent a long while brainstorming a new name, and eventually found a halfway decent domain name which I bought from Namecheap for about $10. Amazing that almost all domains have now gone - and are being used as "this domain is for sale" type holding pages - do people actually make money by doing this?  I guess that they must do…

With that done, I then needed to get a small hosting account, which I found over at DSA Media, for a great price of just 35 per annum.  I went for the Personal Hosting rather than the Business Hosting, as this new site is not going to be at all mission critical.  With all that done, I then had to set the Nameservers on the new Domain - which took only a moment.

So, as of right now, idea is there, domain is purchased and hosting is set up.  Next up is a site build and I'll brainstorm that in a post tomorrow!  Once the site is built I'll also divulge the URL as this project will be pretty useless if readers cannot see exactly what's going on.

Until tomorrow…

Is a great niche! I bought a domain meaning to work on some genealogy stuff a while ago but never got around to actually using it in the end.

I think it's becoming more and more popular, especially with the internet making it even easier for users to research their families.

ps can you install the subscribe to comments plugin? I forget to come back and check :P
