Abandoned Project: 5 Starred
I have so many things going on that I sometimes just forget about projscts that I start, get sidetracked, then unintentionally abandon them.
A good example of this is my "Top 100 List" script called 5starred. Totally forgot about it until I wanted to make a list of good looking osCommerce stores for my other blog! You can see an example at Club osC.
My idea was to sell this as a going concern to someone who can push it forward - as I simply have too much on my plate right now. Got a few sniffs of interest, but now I'm wondering if it wouldn't make more sense to actually get a website up and start selling the script as an Automated Download. I think it would sell all day long at (say) £10. I need to investigate the possibility of getting this up and running!
The script as it stands is a bit problematic, as some of the best features are PHP5 only. However, I have now got it running on PHP4 (with limited features)…
What would you do? Sell the site, intellectual property, and script for a smallish lump-sum, or get a webpage up and promote the product as a paid-for download? Whichever way I decide, I have a few ideas for upsells (after the inital sale)…
I'm seriously in 2 minds - advice needed!

What about getting a quick sales page up and have it up for sale with the automated download, but then put the word out that you're interested in selling the whole shebang. Could be easier to get the lump sum with a ready made site.

I think if you have a lot on your plate right now that you could probably do without the support side of it when users get stuck if you decide to run it yourself.

Cheers chaps - you both pretty much are spot on.
I don't quite have the time to spend on support, but I don't want to totally abandon the project.
So…
I've set up a page linked to DPD etc. http://www.5starred.com - not bad, eh
