DO AS I SAY, not as I do
Back in October I managed to nuke one of my sites. Just a dumb error on my part, deleted it all whilst transferring hosts and no back-up.
I tried to find a backup, but "other stuff" got in the way, so for almost 3 months the site was just a "server blank page" - you know the "index of" type thing with the little icons. Real good, eh
Anyway, towards the end of January I found a partial backup, and replaced the sales page, a "how to" video. I uploaded the product to Digital Product Delivery (it was previously being sold on the crapola that is CLickbank).
I then went in hunt of the extra pages in the domain, and managed to find them on archive.org. Throughout all this, the forum part of the site was also broken - I had managed to get the DB, which was using SMF 1.1.3. Not knowing this at the time, I installed a new 1.1.4 SMF pages - hence users could read the forum but not post. So I had to fix that up - a few changes to the DB and all is pretty much OK.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I've got the site up and running again. In the last 10 days, I've sold 7 products at £29 each. And that's without any promotion whatsoever - just people linking through and deciding to buy!
Which brings me to the point of this post;
How many sales did I lose during the (almost) 3 months that the site was offline?
7 sales in 9 days extrapolates to about 65 sales in 3 months. I've maybe missed out on $3.5k in product sales! That's a lot of money lost just caused by my stupidity and forgetfulness.
So, as with any other so called "Make Money Online" blog, take the bloggers level of experience with a pinch of salt. Had I been more "with it", I'd have fixed up the site just as soon as I broke it. D'oh.
