As you will no doubt be aware, I've been playing with osCommerce quite a bit over the past couple of months. I decided to release a few templates built specifically for the RC2 version of osCommerce.

Introducing the "Green Template"

As you can see, I've gone for a (very) green scheme. As we have spring and summer upcoming I thought it might be a nice relaxing scheme for people to use.

There's perhaps 4 or 5 different shades of green, and some other funky graphics as well. I made a new button set and updated a couple of the icons to better match the scheme. most of the changes have been done in the stylesheet, so this is literally a 1 minute installation on a new install of osCommerce RC2. Easy as 123!

Here's a close-up portion showing a bit of the "Cart" page;

Don't worry about the "smudges" inteh image, they are only there as I compressed it a bit too much (it's known as "artifacts"). Ok, so it's a pretty nice template, easy to install and all the rest of it.

All I need to do is package it up into a .zip and write some install instructions. The instructions will go something like this;

  • Install a new osCommerce RC2
  • Open up template .zip file, unzip to somewhere on your hard drive
  • Upload the template files to overwrite those you installed at Step 1.
  • Done!

Is there anyone else making RC2 templates? I've not found anyone who is making templates for anything other than osCommerce 2.2. No-one seems to have bothered with RC1 or RC2 - even though they are the only downloads now available for new users.

I didn't bother with anything "out of the ordinary" like jQuery and what-not. Thought this might cause more problems than solutions ;)

osCommerce RC2 users; will let you know where to get the download when I get it packaged up and ready to download.

Obviously, once the user has installed the theme, there will be more work required for them to do - eg, replace the osCommerce logo with one of their own, add extra infoboxes, contributions etc.  Just installing a "wallpaper" in a room does not make it habitable - you also need a TV, couch, lamp and so on…

    Will you charge for this template? If so, where will you sell it? I was thinking that I'd like to get in to making templates and selling them.
    thanks,
    liz

    i'm still trying to figure out why you are using oscommerce?
    the changes you are making are a million times easier if you are using zencart…

    PI; Zen Cart!?! You mean the over-coded, crappy cart that is based on osCommerce and is run by a bunch of non-coders? It's an awful piece of work.

    The changes I made to make that green template only took less than 1 hour (of which the most time was making the graphics. Changes to code consisted of a few changes in the stylesheet, a search and replace across 40 files. A change in the header, and a slight change to 1 other file (removed three lines of code). That's pretty easy ;) I don't think it would be a million times easier using ZC ;)

    Liz; I might be selling it - if you read this blog you would know that I have a number of template selling sites ;)
