Another Site Sold, only 500 to go ;)
As some will be aware, I've started cutting back on my online activities in order to prepare for my foray into the offline (aka eBay) sales arena.
Over the past weeks, I've sold sites ranging from a few dollars, to upwards of $4000.
Today, I sold another site.
The site in question is a blog on which I earn money from Adsense and Link Sales. The going price for such a site is about 10*monthly, so I totted up the earnings from the past 6 months, divided it by 6 (giving the monthly average free of seasonal fluctuations), then multiplied the result by 10. This gave a figure that I thought was fair for the site.
I then went to a couple of forums (neither of which are known for site sales) - I have been a member of both of these forums for a few years and so I know the characters on them. Well, anyway, I posted up some info about the site, it's earnings etc, the price I required and asked for anyone seriously interested to email me.
Within 10 minutes, the site was sold.
A nice, easy deal, thank you very much to the buyer. The "buy it now" price was in the low 4 figure range. It took just two emails back and forth for me to answer a couple of questions that the buyer had and for the buyer to decide to go ahead and purchase.
Compare and Contrast
Compare this to my recent offering of those "business in a box" packages at just $25 each. I have a couple of people asking question after question after question before buying - surely at the low price point, these are worth a punt - if it all goes wrong, the maximum lost is $25 for goodness sake!
I'm not going to bother selling these sites any longer, as they are too much trouble for the low cost involved!
Seems to me that it's easier to build up a site over 6 months, then sell it, than it is to give someone all the tools necessary to let them Do It Themselves. I wonder why that is?

LOL… hmmm, I wonder why people have such a hard time buying into the $25 sites. OOOOHHHH right - they have to work hard to build it up.
I think if you have the time to build up a site over a 6 month period and then sell it - why not do that - the four figures mark seems to make it well worth the effort rather than having to do a lot of back and forth for the $25 sites.
Congrats on the sale by the way!

Did you have to maintain the website in question? From the way you describe it, it sounds pretty much automated. If it was as maintenance free as most of my TLA/AdSense websites then why sell a goose that takes care of itself and lays golden eggs?

I wrote a couple of posts per week, nothing too much.
I have hundreds other such sites.

Presumably, you don't also write a couple of posts per week for the hundreds of others?
Comment by burt — October 18, 2007 @ 7:18 pm
No, most of these are auto-posted using rewritten PLR stuff.

Burt,
Do you think blogs are worth more than static sites then? Im thinking of flogging mine on once Ive completed uni - Ive built up a business around it as well so Im figuring it will be worth $$$ in 5 years time, especially averaging 5 posts per day on the blog.

I wouldn't say that blogs are worth more than static sites or vice-versa. I suppose it depends upon the content, the userbase and so on. The advantage a blog has (over a static site) is user interaction in the form of comments, guest articles and so on.
I would have thought that your blog would be worth many, many thousands if you can keep the momentum going on it.

Burt, the site is carrying its own momentum at the moment, bugger wont slow down.

Customer feedback: As the purchaser, just over a month ago, of the site Burt mentions in this posting I thought it might be a good time to give some feedback.
We're very happy with our purchase and the way the deal went so smoothly. The site was everything Burt said it would be, and he sold it at a very fair price. We have to do a little work on it - a couple of postings a week - but that's no problem. There are also some changes we want to make, but that's only natural to make it "our site".
All in all, a very good deal and we'd be more than happy to do business again.
Thanks
Kay
